Now I switched back to the default of M. Then composer started giving me back these errors.

Even with a bare skeleton of the composer. I even went back in time with composer all the way to 1. So I'm thinking there is something within the composer project consuming a lot of memory that even the basic Symfony installation can no longer update. Composer install on that matter works like a charm.

My composer. I have the same issue, I tried to add fos-rest-bundle on my project but can't, facing the same Allowed memory size error.
I have the same error when trying to update my project as well.
That much goes for best practice. If you absolutely need to run update on such a machine hovewer, then you can simply change PHP ini setting on the fly by specifying it in the command line.

I personally had to use this way when certain PHP functions were disabled by my provider. Steveb-p I'm not running composer update on production, only on development. I could alias the composer command ofcourse, but that doesn't really fix the problem at hand imho. It's just a workaround.

Don't get me wrong I'm totally with you when we're talking about this memory issue, but I can understand that it might become troublesome to solve. Remember to restart your ssh client afterwards. It has been a very long-time standing fact that the update process requires a lot of memory. The bigger your dependency graph gets, the more rules Composer has to create for the solver to analyze.
Narrowing constraints, not including dev dependencies, upgrading to php 7, these are all ways to reduce the memory footprint. But on large applications it is virtually impossible to get below 1Gb for update operations. Good luck with that.. TangMonk Version maps required to check compatibility between libraries is constructed as a rather large array of arrays which usually causes memory spike.

Since you shouldn't really call compose update or compose require on a production machine you want to run composer install only combined with composer.

What strikes me here is the jump from MB to MB when loading the symfony framework. Can you please specify what the actual problem is? So far I have not seen one.
2 What do I have to do to resolve it?
The fatal error and the log doesn't give it away? Resolving dependencies needs a lot of memory so that is probably normal. Improve memory usage resolving dependencies Improve memory usage resolving dependencies …. It is known that composer update takes a lot of memory: composer , composer , I am playing with a profiler blackfireio to make a demo in my local PHP meetup phpvigo and I found out a way to use less memory. 1 Introduction: why does Fatal Error happen?
Solving the dependency graph problem takes a lot of memory, so when invoking composer we need more memory. Bumping memory limit on single script Make sure that php is pointing to the right version in your path! Composer consumes a huge amount of memory Why it use so much Memory, is memory leak problem?
