- Book Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
It can. There is. Cover and synopsis from Goodreads. My husband read it before I did. Well, for one thing, I really just love that cover.

And one of the other reasons that I thought I was sure to love Mara Dyer was the little fact that 34 of my Goodreads friends rated it 4 or 5 stars. And there were only like 10 other ratings from my other Goodreads friends.
And while I normally try to make my reviews as positive as possible, this book made me pretty angry so this may get a bit ranty. A Bad Start… I had issues with this book right from the beginning.
And what does her family do? They pack up and move. And Joseph, though only twelve, accepted without much explanation that we were moving and agreed to leave his friends without complaint. A year-old moves without complaining at all?
I get it, completely. Maybe a third, or a fourth. And if it gets to the point where moving is the ONLY option, then do it. I understand that in this story the character needed to move, but this could have been handled so much more realistically.

And did she really need to move? Another thing that really bothered me was there were lots of little irrelevant things thrown in. There were tons of little instances like this, and it just kind of drove me crazy. I kind of liked Noah a little until it got to the part where they hear a chicken get its head cut off and Mara freaks out and then Noah calls her a hypocrite because she eats meat.
See a Problem?
And I just feel like they were such jerks to each other. And that teacher who throws things at her students—what??? There would be lawyers getting involved so fast… I know that these are all little things, but they just all add up to so much that bothered me. There was a change and I did not know that the book was actually paranormal. I was expecting something Sci-Fi or at least something like Dexter.
The Mara Dyer Trilogy
I guess I kept expecting it to be like Inception and Memento, because of that one review I read a long time ago. And yes, I understand that those movies are not the easiest to follow, and can be very confusing. But when those kinds of stories are done well, you understand at least most of it at the end. And I enjoyed one of the twists at the end of the book. I hate to do it, but it must be done.

Instead, I took two weeks to read it and wrote 14 pages of ranting notes. Andrea is a mom, writer, spoilerphobe and Harry Potter addict.
Well this makes me a little sad, but when you bring up all the things that irked you, it totally makes sense that you came to the determination that you did. This book is… different. And I guess it falls under the "you either love it or you hate it" category with little grey area. The creep factor and unexplainables and darkness really made the book for me. I always appreciate an honest review, even if I disagree.
I am a big fan of this book, and the second, but I think ultimately if you don't connect with the characters, it probably isn't worth your time to keep going.
A lot of the psych stuff is covered in further depth in 2 though, so if you have an curiosity about that, you could skim it :. Aw, sorry you couldn't get into this one. I expected more from it too honestly, but I think that I liked more than you did because I did feel for Mara.
Well… that was unexpected. I haven't read this one, but I really want to. I didn't read your review sorry , but I know you won't mind, because you hate spoilers! I've read some great reviews of this one. Too bad you didn't like it…especially if you actually bought a copy! It's too bad you couldn't get into this one, but I see where you are coming from after reading your review.
I am a huge fan for this series and just love the darkness and the craziness and the characters. But I know from my own experience if you can't connect with a character then you probably aren't going to enjoy the book no matter how much you wish you could.
I hope your next read is more enjoyable for you! I do think the second one was better, however, despite its awesomeness I don't recommend it if you didn't like Unbecoming at all. I have came to the conclusion of myself, that I am insanely obsessed with the first and second book.
I believe every detail on every page is worth reading, but once I start reading, I want to know more and more. I want to know who the real Mara Dyer is, despite the fact that her identity is meant to be concealed. Notify me of follow-up comments by email.
